A Low Hypoglycemic Diet

A low hypoglycemic diet involves eating foods low in carbohydrates and fats. Keeping blood glucose levels low is very important. While having some carbohydrates and fats in your diet is vital as they provide fuel to the body, high levels are a major contributing factor in obesity and diabetes.

Foods that contain proportionately high amounts of sugar, corn syrup, and corn sweetener should be avoided. These ingredients are found in a wide range of food products such as candies, cakes, ice cream, and cookies. Foods with complex carbohydrates such as grains, pasta, and potatoes are a better choice. They take longer for the body to break down and better regulate blood glucose levels.

Whole milk, cheese, and meat consumption should be limited. These products tend to be high in fat. When consuming dairy or meat products, skim milk and lean meats are better choices. When cooking, use oil sparingly.

Foods high in soluble fiber are a good choice. These would include oats, legumes, and pectin in fruit. Soluble fibers delay the absorption of glucose, helping to prevent hypoglycemia symptoms between meals. If eating canned fruits, be sure to choose those that are not in heavy syrup as they will be high in high fructose corn syrup and calories.

Many common beverages such as soda, sports drinks, lemonade, and juices can be high in carbohydrates. These drinks can really spike your blood glucose levels. Alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and spirits are also high in carbohydrates and calories. Caffeine intake should also be limited as it stimulates the production of adrenaline. This is detrimental to a low hypoglycemic diet.

A low hypoglycemic diet should also involve eating smaller, more frequent meals. It helps manage hypoglycemia so that glucose enters into the blood stream in smaller doses. Skipping meals is not good for controlling blood glucose levels. It is a good idea to eat foods high in protein with each meal. If you are away at work, school, or traveling, be prepared with meals and snacks to help you eat healthy and stick with a low hypoglycemic diet.
